Thinking About Christmas

"A Christmas Bouquet" 24"x24" - Mary Maki Rae-2016(c)

Thinking about Christmas Decor for this year.
I'm Inspired by this Painting with Dahlias arranged in a Straw Basket and a Sunflower placed in a Vintage Glass Coffee Jar. I'm enjoying them placed upon an Antique - Embroidered Shawl. ( I added the lace for this painting -In reality - it has the classic 12" Silk Fringe and Large Bright flowers - similar to the ones in the Basket.) I think the Painting radiates a beautiful "Bohemian Style" - that I've always enjoyed-!

It Snowed Today-! The first time for this Year.
So now I'm really enjoying the "snow" and the Snowberries added to the small paintings of "A Winter Walk"-! (May add a few Snow Flakes-!)

A Fall Obsession

Fall Bouquets in Black & White Vases
Mary Maki Rae 2016 (c)

Finishing up on Art for the Annual Vision 20/20
Gala Show and Fundraiser -

"Fairwood Trees in the Fall" - Mary Maki Rae 2016(c)

The Leaves - Such a Joy right now to behold at every window in the house - Quite a show for a while - until the Fall Winds sweep them all away-!

Turns out - I find them quite inspiring and perfect subject matter for some small wood panels that I'm working on at the present time.
I find this technique of layering many colors over other colors in light and dark warm autumn tones - to give a pleasing - Impressionistic effect-!
Rather like weaving a multi-colored fabric of a rich brilliance.
For the trees and branches I've used an Acrylic pouring medium - that shines when it is dry. I kept it that way because I liked how it contrasted with the hand-painted surfaces and how it gave a slightly different depth and subtle reflection - depending upon the light.

Another - in lighter tones on Watercolor Paper -
The trees look more transparent.

"Autumn Leaves" Mary Maki Rae 2015(c)
This one I painted last year -
much more detail and took much longer-!
More to come soon.....

Blue&White-Persian Delight

"Persian Delight" Acrylic 12x16 - Mary Maki Rae 2016(c)

What goes into a Painting and what inspires it-?
It can be many things - this time it was just this Blue & White Dish that I found in a in a Decor Shop along with a cloth napkin with a Persian-like Pattern - also in Blue & White -plus Aqua. When I got home I realized that I was attracted to that Dish because it reminded me of a small Hand-painted Blue & White Dish with it's pointy stripes - that Robert had bought for me - long ago when we would poke around in old Book Shops and Antique Shops - We had such Fun-!
So I guess it's true - that we do paint our Memories - almost uncousiously sometimes. . . .

The Palette - to begin with.

I Brought in some bright Oranges and a vibrant - deep violet Dianthus - just in bloom - really enjoyed the effect with the Blue & White

And the Palette really changed and came to life - with more different-colored Flowers and Leaves-!  If it was a larger painting - I would add even more details on the Table and on the left-hand side. But for now I really enjoy it as is-!

Lilly Bouquet

"Lilly Bouquet" -12"x 16" Acrylic - Mary Maki Rae (c)2016
This Painting started out as a Summer Lilly Bouquet displayed in a richly textured clay pot. Then the first splendid Fall Maple Leaf appeared on the Deck.
It thereby influenced the color composition plan. So I see this painting now as a transitional one - of Summer slowing evolving into the Fall Season of the Year.

Summer TeaCup Pillow

Painting & Pillow Design By Mary Maki Rae 2016(c)
"The Summer Teacup Muse Pillow" - From "The Seasons: Spring-Summer- Fall-Winter Quartet". This one "Summer" looks so cheerful with the"Rainbow" paintings. ( I like the way the Pink Trim sets the design off perfectly.)

Here's the Back of the Summer Pillow - in a Sunny Yellow with a bow-!

"Inspiration" Acrylic on Canvas-Mary Maki Rae (c)
Working on this painting - not quite finished yet. I need to add more flowers. I was so Inspired to paint this Bouquet that I received as a gift-!
It contained so many more flowers besides the Mauve Tulips - there were beautiful deep Blue Dutch Irises - dark Burgundy Tulips and many - many tiny fragrant "Sweet Rocket" plants that I remember painting from long ago. . . .
(We also went out to buy a few more Plants for the deck - that's where the Cosmos came in-!)

"Wild Wave" Acrylic on Canvas Mary Maki Rae (c)
Another experiment with the "Acrylic pouring method" - I liked this one - I would like to try it on "parts" of one of my larger canvases soon. . . .

Windy Day

"Windy Day" Acrylic on Canvas - Mary Maki Rae (c)2016

More experimenting -!
This time using a new technique with a "Pouring Medium".

To 1/4 cup of the Medium  - I added 1 teaspoon of acrylic paint of one chosen color. For the small painting shown above - I used Six different Colors in Six different cups.
I then poured the paint one by one onto a "Wet" background - Which results in a Soft - Floating - active type of effect-!

When dry - I added a soft touch of detail with my "Sponge Technique".
I could Add more detail with flowers or such - But I like it just the way it is right now - open to the imagination-!

"A Meadow of Trees" Acrylic on Canvas
Mary Maki Rae 2016(c)

When pouring the Medium onto a "Dry" Background - I used just one color - letting the paint dry very firm - just touching at the top - this created the image shown above - of a "meadow of trees".
Then using my sponge I added two greens and a blue to indicate Leaves and grass.
I'm now going to paint in some Flowers and Ferns to Brighten the scene-!

A Blue Lavender Meadow

In A Blue-Lavender Meadow - Mary Maki Rae 2016 (c)
Have been Experimenting with "Artist Masking Fluid".
I drew the fluid first onto the white watercolor paper - to represent "Lace" on the Dress (see image below) and the "Flowers" on the Hat.
Then I set the painting aside for the fluid to dry (about an hour or two).
Leaving the Dried fluid on - I painted the Dress - Background - and Flowers.
Then I used a Sponge Technique over the Grass - Sky - and Dress to Blend it all Together.

I'm setting the painting aside again for a while - then I may add a Flower or something else for her hand - If this piece were larger I would add more Flowers in the Grass - I'll do that next time . . .
Really liked using the Art Fluid technique - and will try it soon on a more "abstract" piece-!

Changed the location of my Paint Table - over closer to the window and I'm enjoying the use of more "Light"-!

Spring Pastels And Texture

Pastel Spring Painting By Mary Maki Rae (c)2016
Spring Pastels and Texture have been on my mind recently.
You can't see it in the above image - but I've added some texture to the background of this painting - that I like so far - a lot-!
I thought this image might look good printed on fabric - then add Embroidered details on the hair and dress to balance the texture in the Background.
However - I may paint the detail on the hair - Then add a raised pattern on just the dress.
Kate and I went shopping in a Art Supply Store - (Like a candy shop for Artists-!)(Daniel Smith's) And we bought some new products to experiment with for texture - so we'll see what developes. . .

In the actual sample - the granular texture shimmers slightly -
like beads perhaps - on silk fabric
(Also reminded me of a Dotted Swiss Fabric from long ago)
On this pink one - I brushed the lavender paint overlay in one direction -
I liked the pink spaces showing though.

On the blue above - I brushed the Lavender randomly -
creating more movement.
All and All - just to lose oneself in experimenting sometimes is Good -!
Hope you have a Nice Easter Holiday . . . MMR
