Magic Of Red

It always happens this time of year - I get a craving for the Color RED-! It's been below freezing weather here in the Northwest - and just looking at Red seems to make me feel warm - happy - and light-hearted-!
So - I brought out my Stash of Red Fabrics ( most of these from Angeline & Doug) to consider sewing into something Cheerful-!
Pictured above is a small decorative Pillow I've just finished.
Below is a close-up of sewing the stripe-covered cording to the sides of a Beautiful Silk Brocade center-piece.

I decided to add more Fabrics for contrast - like these beautiful Black-Gold-Red Patterned ones pictured below with the Red Pillow. I thinking they all look really Great-!
Now I'm Inspired to work on some more Ideas-!

Matisse Inspired

Leafing through some of my "saved" Architectural Digest Magazines - I came across these Rooms that were directly inspired by a Collection of 20 Matisse Silk-screened Prints. (The Original Collages were designed by Matisse for the Book "Jazz" in 1947.)
How Fresh and Vibrant they still look today-!
In this room - Interior Designer Thomas Britt made a great use of the primary colors - Red- Yellow - and Blue.
He chose a bold Blue & Yellow Chintz and a Blue & Ivory stripe - Both of which pick up many of the same colors in the Matisses -
the whole design swung from that - He says.
The Louis XVI chairs establish order in the room - the chintz upholstered pieces - relax it - in a way - mess it up a little-!
but still so amazingly it all works so delightfully-!

"Summer Delight"

Summer Delight Painting-6x4-Completed"Summer Delight" - 17"x22" by Mary Maki Rae 2013(c) ******************************************* A New Figure Painting. Started with a Light Blue-Violet Line Drawing - quite Satisfying . . . What Color next-? I've so many Lavender beginnings -No? Blue-? No. Why not then a Peachy-Orange-? Orange-? Not my usual Cup of Tea . . . But then Why not try it-? Well . . .I believe it worked out decidedly Well - And became even more so when I added the Magenta - Mauves - Turqoise Blues - and a Soft Celedon Green - All so complimentary - if kept Light and Airy. - It created a 'Dazzeling Effect' in the Sunshine of my Studio-! ( It's now Completed) ****************************************** Fortuny-Orange room-6.3 Speaking of Peachy-Orange - Above is a perfect example showing the use of this Color. I couldn't keep my eyes away from this Room - It's from a Fabulous book on the Textile Designs of Mariano Fortuny. "Lamballe" is the name of this 18th Century Design - after Princess de Lamballe - a confidante to Marie Antoinette. This wall treatment is reinforced by Classic White Detainling - including the hand-carved Mantle that anchors the Room. Fortuny-same Orange room-5x7 A Closeup of the same Room. The Chairs are Upholstered in "Fioi" in the Color of Burnt Apricot & Silver Gold. Fortuny-Gold-Violet Drape-5x7 A Fortuny Gold-Violet Drape - Beautiful-! Fortuny-Blue-White Headboard-5x7 Also enjoyed this Blue&White Fortuny Design on this Headboard & Bedside Table. ***************************************************** I really think Fortuny was Creative Textile Master of the First Order - each page in this book is an Inspiration-!Every page showcases his Fabrics in the most sublimely Decorated and Furnished Settings. He didn't have a fear of looking to the Past as a source for Inspiration. He reinvented it into somethings Modern and current. So much so that his Fabrics are still produced today in same factory in Italy - with the same methods and machinery that he invented. And as shown in the book - they decorate the most Modern of Rooms for clients today-! Fortunys Easel-5x7 Fortuny's Original Easel - Love that rather whimsical Heart-Shaped Pallette-! ********************************************************** THE BOOK: "Fortuny Interiors" By Brian D. Dazzeling Dahlias

Dahlia Garden Muse-6.3x7
"Dahlia Garden Muse" 18" x23" Acrylic -
By Mary Maki Rae (c) 2013
Dahlias seem to dominate many stands of the Flower Markets in Seattle during our City's Sunny Summer Days.
Their vibrant colors are so welcome - after such a cool Spring this year-!
Declared the City's Official flower nearly a Century ago - as the Dahlias thrive in our Northwest moist moderate climate.

King Fisher Painting"Still Life with Dahlias" - 18"x24" Acrylic
By Mary Maki Rae (c)2013
Lucky for me - I just recieved the nicest Gift of a huge armful of Dahlias from my neighbor who does so well growing them-!
I've always enjoyed Painting and Arranging Dahlias because they grow in nearly every Hue and Array of shapes and forms - from spiky to wispy - svelte to spherical.
I've found the Arrangements are long-lasting - so Perfect for special occaisions.
The large - lighter colors can look especially striking and classical.
Also they will Bloom through October - if the Summer weather is not to Hot-!

Moms Pillow-with SHELLS-6.3x5-Two
A Pillow I made recently for my Mom - using the Perennials Fabric mixed with an Embroidered Silk Fabric. I thought it would look perfect with her Biege Cotton Ticking Sofa. Here it is with the Shells during her visit last week-a great time was had by all-!
 Moms Pillow- Green Godess-BACK-6.5x5
For the Back View - I used an Envelope Closing made of Biege Linen with a Tie made from the Striped Perennials Fabric used on the Front.(I thought the Pillow looked good reversed to this side too-)

The addition of the Figure with Flowers and the Landscape Scene brings in Freshness and a sence of place.
(the painting is not this fuzzy looking - I took the image on my deck during a very warm sunny day - so it must have been that!)

Summer & Shells

Two Chairs-Wall Shell-Blue Glasses-7x5

Med. Wall shell-Sml. Full shell-6.3x4
To help stay cool during this 90 degree heat wave here in the Northwest - it seems right to work with the Shells - Probably because I associate them with Water - the Sea - and the Beach . . . .
It's fun to have them up in the Summer to hold Fresh Flowers - they look so great and natural on the deck with lots of Sunshine-!

Summer Sewing

Chair with 1 Cushion-Girl with Parrot-6.3x4
Cushions & Painting - Acrylic - 18x18
By Mary Maki Rae-2013(c)
I was inspired by this Aqua - Biege & White Striped Fabric By "Perennials" - to create these Cushions for Two Classic "Windsor-type" Chairs. I find the chairs so much more Comfortable now - especially for the upper back - when leaning against those spindles-!
I'm going to use them on our Deck - They would also work great for a kitchen in a Beach House too -!
Chair with 3 Cushions-Girl with Parrot-6.3x7
The two larger - puffy Pillows - I made for Two Vintage White Wicker Chairs - Basic Quilted Square Shapes with Tie Closures to go with the Chair Cushions.
I enjoy the Simple - Carefree Look of this Set-!

"Collecting Shells" Acrylic-18"x24"
By Mary Maki Rae - 2013(c)
One of the most enjoyable activities in the Summer - just walking on the Beach - breathing in the fresh salty air - enjoying the Blue skies - Sail Boats and collecting Sea Shells-!
This painting was inspired by that experience.
I remember how much I loved finding this fragile Scallop Shell on a Beach in the San Juans and admiring it's beautiful pink and mauve colors-!

"Bouquet in Blue Pitcher" -Acrylic on Canvas -By Mary Maki Rae - 2013(c)
Lace Cap Hydrangias from an Old-fashioned Classic Garden - framed by an Antique Lace Hankercheif.
Arranged in a tall Metal Pitcher found by Robert that I painted in shades of blue and textured Magenta.
It's now an Elegant Vessel for this small Bouquet. The Cosmos & Impaitents inspired the Magenta Color for the background.
And for an accent against the pristine White -I couldn't forget the Blue Forget-me-nots-!
NOTE: I'll be Away for a While - because of Technical Difficulties with Posting. . . .
Hope to be Back Soon - when the Problems are Resolved-!  MMR

Roses & Lillies - ll

"Roses & Lillies"-(Close Up) Acrylic
on  Canvas - By Mary Maki Rae - 2013 (c)
Finally finished the Painting - after setting it aside for a few days.
Came back and was amazed at how the addition of three Butterflies and a small stand of Wild Lavender Flowers - visually balanced all those Lillies and Roses.
Love the results - It's akin to the sudden discovery of a lively - profuse Meadow - filled with lovely - luxuriant Flowers-!

Looks like some Sunny Weather is finally here for a while -!
